What is DDL, DML and DCL?

Large variety of SQL commands divided into three subgroups:

  1. DDL (Data Definition Language): describes how the data should reside in the database. It includes CREATE, ALTER table SQL commands.
  2. DML (Data Manipulation Language): deals with SQL commands like SELECT, INSERT, etc.
  3. DCL (Data Control Language): deals with SQL commands concerns with rights, permissions and controls of the database system for example GRANT, REVOKE etc.
